Shota Berekashvili, the Chair of the Sector Economy and Economic Policy Committee, participated in the Energy Community Parliamentary Plenum in the European Parliament.

In his address, he emphasised the strategic significance of energy development for the nation. He underscored the fundamental principles of Georgian energy development and presented four key directions: energy independence, which serves as a strategic objective for Georgia; the diversification of investments in the energy sector; Georgia’s positioning as a regional and European energy hub; and the Black Sea Submarine Cable Project, which establishes a direct connection with the European Union.

According to his perspective, Georgia places a strong emphasis on achieving complete energy independence by 2030. This objective entails surpassing national energy consumption through local energy production, thereby bolstering the country’s economic security and fostering regional stability.

The development of the energy sphere holds strategic importance for our nation. We are prepared for the forthcoming market liberalization, the necessary reforms, and our aspiration to establish an open and liberal market environment. This presents an opportune moment for strategic investments. We accord paramount significance to the diversification of investment sources, encompassing both the European Union and regions such as the Persian Gulf and Central Asia”, -  he emphasised.

In accordance with his information, Georgia is strategically positioned as an energy hub, facilitating the integration of energy potential across various regions. It serves as a crucial connecting link between the South Caucasus, the Black Sea region, and the European Union.

As per his assessment, the role of the energy hub bolsters the geopolitical status of the country, enhances international cooperation, and facilitates sustainable economic growth.

Our country has set a paramount priority to ensure complete alignment of national legislation with the respective EU laws by 2030. At this critical juncture, the Black Sea Submarine Project stands as one of the central projects in our energy development strategy”, - he emphasised.
